In 2025, Anglo American’s Kumba Iron Ore will once again be opening opportunities for young South Africans with its Kolomela Mine Learnership Programme, which seeks to give skills development to people by offering practical experience in the mining industry. It is located in Postmasburg, Northern Cape, with the aim of providing the local youth skills and knowledge for a career in mining and engineering.
This learnership is located at Kolomela Mine which is one of the flagship assets of Kumba Iron Ore. This mine is essential for economic development and employment opportunities in the region. Anglo American is making a positive impact by offering learnerships, which helps to alleviate the skills shortage of artisans in South Africa while making sure that the local people are educated and qualified to take up jobs in the relevant industries.
What the Learnership Offers
Over a period of 18 months, successful applicants will receive training in a combination of their hand’s on work placement and classroom based instruction. Participants are to be trained in the following areas :
Mining Operations Learnership which includes open cast mining, the operation of heavy mobile machines, and adherence to safety regulations.
Engineering Artisan Learnerships that includes trades like Diesel Mechanic, Electrician, Millwright, Fitter, and Plater/Welder.
This integrated method guarantees that students obtain the relevant technical skills and the practical experience needed for a safe and efficient operation in a mining environment. Every participant is awarded a monthly allowance along with personal protective equipment, and they benefit from trained mentors and supervisors.

Available Learnership Opportunities
1. Engineering Learnerships
Fields available:
- Diesel Mechanic
- Instrumentation
- Fitter
- Boilermaker
- Auto Electrician
- Electrician
- Rigger
- Millwright
Duration: 3 years
- 1st year: Institutional training at Sivos Technical Training Centre
- 2nd year: On-the-job/core training at Kolomela Mine
- 3rd year: Complete trade test
Requirements:
- Grade 12
- N2 certificate with 4 relevant subjects
- Millwright applicants: minimum of 5 relevant subjects
- Successfully pass medical job-fit assessment (RFA)
2. Plant Learnerships
Focus: Mineral Processing
Duration: 24 months
What you’ll get:

- MQA Certificate
- Personal Protective Equipment
Requirements:
- Grade 12 / Technical N3
- Valid South African Driver’s License
- Successfully passed medical job-fit assessments (RFA)
- Ability to obtain LPCAT assessment & valid Fitness Certificate
3. Mining Learnerships
Focus: Open cast mining and mobile equipment
Duration: 18 months

- Skills programme inclusive of experiential learning
- Personal Protective Equipment
Requirements:
- Grade 12 / Technical N3
- Valid South African Driver’s License
- Successfully passed medical job-fit assessments (RFA)
- Ability to obtain or possess a valid Kolomela VTS (Dover) certificate
- Must obtain valid Fitness Certificate
Preference & Eligibility
- Preference will be given to candidates residing in the Tsantsabane Municipality
- Age requirement: 18 to 35 years
